the Dalai Lama and the Master of Kung Fu

Reports reached the Dalai Lama that a certain Master of Kung Fu was roaming the countryside converting young men to the study of violence. Though Tibetan by birth, this man had been raised in Peking and was said to have returned as a secret agent to astonish Tibetans with the superior power of the Chinese in such a way as to render the country open and eager for conquest. The Master of Kung Fu had made his reputation by taking on eight fierce Lolo Warriors who attacked him on a mountain pass, killing seven of them so quickly that the one with the broken legs who survived swore the marvelous voyager had met their attack with movements so swift he seemed merely to walk through them and continue peacefully on his way. Wherever the Master of Kung Fu stopped, he gathered followers and admirers who were fascinated by the mystical beauty of his methods. The dance of destruction, which he was always glad to perform in slow motion before an audience in the marketplace, was said to be awesomely beautiful. Done swiftly, the dance could not be seen. The master would seem to be standing absolutely still. Only a rush Reports reached the Dalai Lama that a certain Master of Kung Fu was roaming the countryside converting young men to the study of violence. Though…Read more

The Hero's Journey

On the hero’s journey, I sometimes reflect: What happens when we let go and abandon ourselves inside of the heart? Is there something left over when we discard everything that we once knew into the rich waters of everything we don’t? Spirit, hearing our call, takes us then into the conclaves of its heart. Into the truth of the matter and the eyes of the world that we once knew, but long ago separated ourselves from. You see, when we reclaim our soul’s path, everything comes back with it. All the mysteries from the past, and the lies we once told ourselves, surface. So that one by one, we can sort through the tapestry of what we thought our hearts were, in order to recreate and reshape it inside of sacred light. By examining each piece of what was, we get to see what is. The trudging feels like death sometimes. As we gently step into the past, describing each shadow. As our physical presence takes shape inside of trauma, we feel the reverberations of what was the truth then. In so doing, our bravery for living this life becomes oh-so-clear. Although the sacred journey does not feel this transparent sometimes, as we On the hero’s journey, I sometimes reflect: What happens when we let go and abandon ourselves inside of the heart? Very often when you listen to something, you emphasize the object. There is still an action; there is still eccentric energy, I would say. In welcoming, you emphasize the welcoming. That means in welcoming you are completely open, open to the perception. In welcoming you are waiting, completely directionless. You live freely without representation, without psychological memory. Your real nature is welcoming. When you come to the understanding that there is nothing to achieve, nothing to obtain— that all knowledge is a going away from what you are looking for— then there is a spontaneous giving up. You do not give up, it gives itself up. Then there is welcoming and another way of listening where the listening and the welcoming are open to themselves. It refers to Itself. Welcoming, listening, is an impersonal state where there is no place to be somebody, to be a person. That is why in welcoming you are spontaneously excited. Excited is not really the word— you are completely expanded. The moment the person comes in the play, you are contracted, fixed to the body. Very often when you listen to something, you emphasize the object. There is still an action; there is still Very often when you listen to something, you emphasize the object. Where do you search for me?

There is a bird on this body tree That dances in the ecstasy of life. No one knows where it is, And who could ever know What its music means? It nests where branches cast deep shadow; It comes in the dusk and flies away at dawn And never says a word of what it intends. No one can tell me anything About this bird that sings in my blood. It isn't colored or colorless; It doesn't have a form, or outline; It sits always in the shadow of love. It lives within the Unreachable, the Boundless, the Eternal And no one can tell when it comes or when it goes. Kabir says, "Fellow seeker, The mystery of this bird Is marvelous and profound. Be wise; struggle to know Where this bird comes to rest." --- I said to the wanting-creature inside me: What is this river you want to cross? There are no travelers on the river-road, and no road. Do you see anyone moving about on that bank, or nesting? There is no river at all, and no boat, and no boatman. There is no tow rope either, and no one to pull it. There is no ground, There is a bird on this body tree That dances in the ecstasy of life. No one knows where it is, And who could ever…Read more

Being Humble

Being humble is right for you now. Don't thrash around showing your strength. You're naked in the bee-house! It doesn't matter how powerful your arms and legs are. To God, that is more of a lie than your weakness is. In his doorway your prestige and your physical energy are just dust on your face. Be helpless and completely poor. And don't try to meet his eye! That's like signing a paper that honors yourself. If you can take care of things, do so! But when you're living at home with God, you neither sew the world together with desires nor tear it apart with disappointments. In that place existence itself is illusion. All that is, is one. Lost in that, your personal form becomes a vast, empty mosque. When you hold on to yourself, you're a fire-worshipping temple. Dissolve, and let everything get done. When you don't, you're an untrained colt, full of erratic loving and biting. Loyal sometimes, then treacherous. Be more like the servant who owns nothing and is neither hungry nor satisfied, who has no hopes for anything, and no fear of anyone. An owl living near the king's palace is considered a bird of misfortune, Being humble is right for you now. Don't thrash around showing your strength. You're naked in the bee-house! What is REAL?

“What is REAL?” asked the Rabbit one day, when they were lying side by side near the nursery fender, before Nana came to tidy the room. “Does it mean having things that buzz inside you and a stick-out handle?” “Real isn’t how you are made,” said the Skin Horse. “It’s a thing that happens to you. When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but REALLY loves you, then you become Real.” “Does it hurt?” asked the Rabbit. “Sometimes,” said the Skin Horse, for he was always truthful. “When you are Real you don’t mind being hurt.” “Does it happen all at once, like being wound up,” he asked, “or bit by bit?” “It doesn’t happen all at once,” said the Skin Horse. “You become. It takes a long time. That’s why it doesn’t happen often to people who break easily, or have sharp edges, or who have to be carefully kept. Generally, by the time you are Real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you get loose in the joints and very shabby. But these things don’t matter at all, because once you are “What is REAL?” asked the Rabbit one day, when they were lying side by side near the nursery fender, before Nana came to tidy the…Read more

That our hearts may soar…

I said it was me who loves you, who calls you beloved and soul of souls, but I'm only selling rags and bones, shouting in the street. I don't know your glory. I thought my shouts would endear you to me but then you stole my cart and donkey. Even my hat blew away. I have nothing to give you. Love words are cheap when they're copied. Call me an imposter, a counterfeit forger, a vaudeville performer who forgets his lines. I pretended to be your lover so people would clap and you would be pleased, but who, who made this love? Your arrow struck me and I fell off the stage. You, you are the lover, the beloved, the love, you, you are this sun that burns in my heart. Pir Elias Amidon ----- I have made the journey into Nothing. I have lit that lamp that Needs no oil. I have cried great streams Of emerald crystals On my scarred knees, begging love To never again let me hear from Any world The sound of my own name, Even from the voice of divine thought Or see that pen you gave me, God, In the sun’s or sky’s I said it was me who loves you, who calls you beloved and soul of souls, but I'm only selling rags and bones, shouting in…Read more

The Last Wolf

The last wolf wandered in the light of a setting sun through the ruined city, his howls echoing off the smashed warrens, a couple lofty crowned high rises still standing, elevators useless. Passing dead traffic signals he howled his way eastward, the mystery of the wild calling out through his voice, his loping gait carrying him deeper into the eternal silence of an approaching endless night. Through clutter and rubble of quiet blocks I heard his voice ascending the hill, and at last his low whine as he climbed floor by empty floor toward the room where I sat in my narrow bed looking west, waiting. I heard him sniffing at the open door, and watched as he walked slowly across the floor towards me. He laid his long gray muzzle on the spare white spread, his eyes burning bright and yellow, small dotted eyebrows quivering. Yes, I said, I know what we have done. Rendered from a poem by Mary TallMountain The last wolf wandered in the light of a setting sun through the ruined city, his howls echoing off the smashed warrens, a couple lofty…Read more

To arrive at what you do not know

In order to arrive at what you do not know

In order to possess what you do not possess

You must go through the way in which you are not.

The Moths and the Flame

The Moths and the Flame Moths gathered in a fluttering throng one night To learn the truth about the candle light, And they decided one of them should go To gather news of the elusive glow. One flew till in the distance he discerned A palace window where a candle burned - And went no nearer; back again he flew To tell the others what he thought he knew. The mentor of the moths dismissed his claim, Remarking: "He knows nothing of the flame." A moth more eager than the one before Set out and passed beyond the palace door. He hovered in the aura of the fire, A trembling blur of timorous desire, Then headed back to say how far he'd been, And how much he had undergone and seen. The mentor said: "You do not bear the signs Of one who's fathomed how the candle shines." Another moth flew out - his ecstatic dizzy flight Turned into an ardent wooing of the light; He dipped and soared in a passionate trance So that self and fire were mingled by his dance. The flame engulfed his wing-tips, body, head, His being glowing a fierce translucent red. And when the The Moths and the Flame Moths gathered in a fluttering throng one night To learn the truth about the candle light, And they decided one…Read more

Words from the masters . . .

Like everything mental, the so-called law of causation contradicts itself. No thing in existence has a particular cause; the entire universe contributes to the existence of even the smallest thing; nothing could be as it is without the universe being what it is.  When the source and the ground of everything is the only cause of everything, to speak of causality as a universal law is wrong. The universe is not bound by its content, because its potentialities are infinite; besides it is a manifestation, or expression of a principle fundamentally and totally free. Nisargadatta Mahraj ~ "This wakefulness that is primordially pure is the empty quality of the nature of our mind. In the moment when we recognize our nature, we do not see any ‘thing’ whatsoever. It is already utterly pure and perfect. That is exactly what we call primordial purity. Inseparable from that is a quality of knowing: we are cognizant, at the same time. This is the spontaneous presence. These two aspects are indivisible." Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche ~ Q: While in theory I am ready to pay any price, in actual life again and again I am being prompted to behave in ways which come in between me and reality. Like everything mental, the so-called law of causation contradicts itself. No thing in existence has a particular cause; the entire universe contributes to the existence of…Read more

The Beloved's Single Face

Let the ascetics sing of the garden of Paradise- We who dwell in the true ecstasy can forget their vase-tamed bouquet. In our hall of mirrors, the map of the one Face appears As the sun's splendor would spangle a world made of dew. Hidden in this image is also its end, As peasants' lives harbor revolt and unthreshed corn sparks with fire. Hidden in my silence are a thousand abandoned longings, My words the darkened oil lamp on a stranger's unspeaking grave. Ghalib, the road of change is before you always, The only line stitching this world's scattered parts. —— The world is no more than the Beloved's single face, In the desire of the One to know its own beauty, we exist. Each place, each moment, sings its particular song of not-being and being. Without reason, the clear glass equally mirrors wisdom and madness. Those who claim knowledge are wrong; prayer just leads to trance, Appearance and faith are mere lees in the Unknowing Wine. Wherever the Footprint is found, that handful of dust holds the oneness of worlds. This earth, burnished by hearing the Name, is so certain of Love That the sky bends unceasingly down, to greet its own light. —— The Let the ascetics sing of the garden of Paradise- We who dwell in the true ecstasy can forget their vase-tamed bouquet. I felt a Funeral, in my Brain, And Mourners to and fro Kept treading, treading, till it seemed That Sense was breaking through. And when they all were seated, A Service, like a Drum, Kept beating, beating, till I thought My Mind was going numb. And then I heard them lift a Box And creak across my Soul With those same Boots of Lead, again, Then Space began to toll, As all the Heavens were a Bell, And Being but an Ear, And I, and Silence, some strange Race Wrecked, solitary, here. And then a Plank in Reason, broke, And I dropped down, and down, And hit a World, at every plunge, And finished knowing... – – – Me and Myself, to banish, Had I Art. Impregnable my Fortress Unto All Heart. But since Myself, assault Me. How have I peace Except by subjugating Consciousness? And since We’re mutual Monarch How this be Except by Abdication, Me, of Me? – – – Behind Me, dips Eternity. Before Me, Immortality. Myself, the Term between. Death but the Drift of Eastern Gray, Dissolving into Dawn away, Before the West begin. ‘Tis Kingdom, afterward, they say, In perfect, pauseless Monarchy, Whose Prince is I felt a Funeral, in my Brain, And Mourners to and fro Kept treading, treading, till it seemed That Sense was breaking through. Two ways

There are only two ways to "conquer" destiny, to be independent of it. One is to enquire for whom is this destiny, and discover that only the ego is bound by destiny and not the Self, and that the ego is non-existent. The other way is to annihilate the ego by completely surrendering to God, by realizing one's helplessness and saying all the time, 'Not I, but Thou oh God' and giving up all sense of 'I' and mine, serving Love, and leaving it to God to do what She likes with you.  Most often a teacher through whom one surrenders to God is helpful upon this path. Complete effacement of the ego is necessary to realize that you have always been beyond destiny.  Whether you achieve this effacement through self-enquiry (Jnana marga or wisdom path) or Bhakti marga (path of Love, surrender, devotion) matters not, for all paths merge into One as Light begins to realize its Self. Since God is verily the Self, love of the Self (Jnana) is love of God (Bhakti). Jnana and Bhakti are thus one and the same. Ramana Maharshi (rendered a bit) There are only two ways to "conquer" destiny, to be independent of it. One is to enquire for whom is this destiny, and discover that only…Read more

Forgive the Dream

Hafiz (Originally rendered by Daniel Ladinsky) Forgive the Dream All your images of winter I see against your sky. I understand the wounds That have not healed in you. They exist Because God and Love Have yet to become real enough To allow you to forgive The dream. You still listen to an old alley song That brings your body pain; Now chain your ears To His pacing drum and flute. Fix your eyes upon The magnificent arch of His brow That supports And allows this universe to expand. Your hands, feet, and heart are wise And want to know the warmth Of a Perfect One’s circle. A true saint Is an earth in eternal spring. Inside the veins of a petal On a blooming redbud tree Are hidden worlds Where Hafiz sometimes Resides. I will spread A Persian carpet there Woven with light. We can drink wine From a gourd I hollowed And dried on the roof of my house. I will bring bread I have kneaded That contains my own Divine genes And cheese from a calf I raised. My love for your Master is such You can just lean back And I will feed you This truth: Your Hafiz (Originally rendered by Daniel Ladinsky) Forgive the Dream All your images of winter I see against your sky. The Guiltless World

If you did not feel guilty you could not attack, for condemnation is the root of attack. It is the judgment of one mind by another as unworthy of love and deserving of punishment. But herein lies the split. For the mind that judges perceives itself as separate from the mind being judged, believing that by punishing another, it will escape punishment. All this is but the delusional attempt of the mind to deny itself, and escape the penalty of denial. It is not an attempt to relinquish denial, but to hold on to it. For it is guilt that has obscured God to you, and it is guilt that has driven you insane. The acceptance of guilt into the mind of God's Child was the beginning of the separation, as the acceptance of the Atonement is its end. The world you see is the delusional system of those made mad by guilt. Look carefully at this world, and you will realize that this is so. For this world is the symbol of punishment, and all the laws that seem to govern it are the laws of death. Children are born into it through pain and in pain. Their growth If you did not feel guilty you could not attack, for condemnation is the root of attack. It is the judgment of one mind by…Read more

One Conversation

Sufi mystics say: “There are three ways to relate to the Divine: One is through Prayer, a step up from that is Meditation or Self Abidance, and a step up from that is Sohbet.” What is meant by Sohbet in this context is difficult to describe. But perhaps most simply, it points to conversation of ‘a totally different nature.’ It is conversation between friends of spirit and heart, a sort of joining through deep listening so that a shared transmission of Heart and Soul may occur. Everything in the created cosmos is in ceaseless conversation, an endless symbiosis, and through beloveds with the attuned ears of the inner heart the One in Conversation with its Self listens and moves and speaks. Through surrender and trust, and a recognition of the Love that we are, this Conversation becomes apparent and Alive. Nothing Ever Goes Wrong

Nisargadatta It is always the unreal that makes you suffer, the unreal desires and fears, the unreal values and ideas, the unreal relationships between people. Abandon the unreal and you are free of pain; truth makes happy, truth liberates.  You will receive everything you need when you stop asking for what you do not need  Once you realize that the road is the goal and that you are always on the road, not to reach a goal, but to enjoy its beauty and its wisdom, life ceases to be a task and becomes natural and simple, in itself an ecstasy.  Love says 'I am everything.' Wisdom says 'I am nothing.' Between the two, my life flows.  All you want is to be happy. All your desires, whatever they may be, are longing for happiness. Basically, you wish yourself well; desire by itself is not wrong. It is life itself, the urge to grow in knowledge and experience. It is the choices you are making that are wrong. To imagine that some little thing- food, sex, power, fame- will make you happy is to deceive oneself. Only something as vast and deep as your real self can make you truly and Nisargadatta It is always the unreal that makes you suffer, the unreal desires and fears, the unreal values and ideas, the unreal relationships between people.…Read more

Spiritual Twelve Steps

Step 1 We admitted we were powerless over our addiction to separation through our thoughts, judgments, opinions, beliefs, fears and feelings, to our desire to know, and to our desire to control existence, all of which we believed was the truth of our self, of others, and of the world. We recognized that all of it was illusions, totally insane, and that for as long as we identified with such illusions, efforts and beliefs our life would be experienced as hell. Step 2 We came to know that a Power Greater than our self could restore us to sanity. Step 3 We made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care and guidance of God as we understood God. Step 4 We made a searching, fearless and conscious inventory of the insane and mistaken beliefs and illusions we were holding as the false truth of our self, others and the world. Step 5 We admitted to God, to our self and to another human being the exact nature of all these insane and mistaken beliefs we were holding. Step 6 We became entirely ready to surrender all of it and allow God to correct and Step 1 We admitted we were powerless over our addiction to separation through our thoughts, judgments, opinions, beliefs, fears and feelings, to our desire to…Read more

Time

The ego has a strange notion of time, and it is with this notion that your questioning might well begin. The ego invests heavily in the past, and in the end believes that the past is the only aspect of time that is meaningful. Its emphasis on guilt enables it to ensure its continuity by making the future like the past, and thus avoiding the present. By the notion of paying for the past in the future (guilt), the past becomes the determiner of the future, making them continuous without an intervening present. For the ego regards the present only as a brief transition to the future, in which it brings the past to the future by interpreting the present in past terms. "Now" has no meaning to the ego. The present merely reminds it of past hurts, and it reacts to the present as if it were the past. The ego cannot tolerate release from the past (this would be its ending), and although the past is over, the ego tries to preserve its image by responding as if it were present. It dictates your reactions to those you meet in the present from a past reference point, obscuring The ego has a strange notion of time, and it is with this notion that your questioning might well begin. The Teachings of Love

An awakened master's continuing responses to a devoted student whose life has been given over to the Journey and to the Teachings of Love. All the thoughts that are running have a specific purpose from the ego mind; to self attack and be right about being rejected. All the self assessments are addiction. The victim identity through the illusion of this "evidence" is happy to run and be spinning with arguments with God. It is for sure a place of pain and suffering. Look at your hidden intention. if you want to be right and know you are right it will always lead to misery. Illusion is completely made up..! The ego mind of loss and lack is not a "rational" mind. "MY ONLY FUNCTION IS THE ONE GOD GAVE ME," confirming in Truth, "salvation cannot be the only purpose you hold while you still cherish others." Bring Truth to these made up ideas. “This thought reflects a goal that is preventing me from accepting my only function," and; "My only function is the one God gave me, I want no other and I have no other." An awakened master's continuing responses to a devoted student whose life has been given over to the Journey and to the Teachings of Love. In the depth of healing, it is essential that whenever thoughts about another's journey come to the mind, to directly surrender them into the Hands of God, and affirm that we don't know what is most helpful for them. This is the opportunity to relinquish all ideas and concerns and learn the deeper trust and joyful confidence that all is unfolding in perfect harmony. Projection and perception always work together. This is the opportunity to go within and illuminate the beliefs in difficulty that made the thoughts show up. Surrender the belief in "right and wrong" "good and bad" and rest in the Truth of God's Grace. --- The unraveling is the Gift. Don't judge or assess the energy. Focus in the heart and just keep saying yes to the Spirit of Love and the healing that is always offered. The perceived discomfort comes from the fear that is wanting to resist and distract from Trust in God's Grace. Everything of Love is truly here. The Truth of Love cannot ever be lost, it is only the illusion that seems to cover up An awakened master's continuing responses to a devoted student whose life has been given over to the Journey and to the Teachings of Love. An Explanation of the Oneness of Being | Awhad al-din Balyani - Sufi - Persia - 13th century In the Name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful . . . Praise belongs to God, before whose oneness there is no before unless the before is He, and after whose singleness there is no after unless the after is He. He is, and there is not with Him any before or after, above or below, closeness or distance, how or where or when, time or moment or duration, manifested existence or place. And He is now as He has always been. He is the One without oneness and the single without singleness. He is not composed of name and named, for His name is Him and His named is Him and there is no name or named other than Him. He is the first without firstness and the last without lastness. Lost In Myself

Farid ud-Din Attar (12th century Persia - Sufi) Lost in myself I disappeared I know not where. A drop that rose from the sea and fell and dissolved again. A shadow that stretched itself out at dawn. When the sun reached noon I was no more. I have no news of my coming or passing away. The whole thing happened quicker than a breath. Ask no questions of the moth. In the candle flame of His Face I have forgotten all answers. In the way of love there must be both knowledge and ignorance. So I have become a dullard and a sage. One must be an eye and yet not perceive. I am blind so that I may see. Dust be on my head, if I can say where in complete not-knowing I have wandered. Attar watched his heart transcend both worlds, and now in Its Light is gone mad with Love. - - - The whole world is a marketplace for Love, For nothing that is remains remote from Love. The Eternal Wisdom made all things in Love, And on Love they all depend, as to Love all turn. The earth, the heavens, the sun, the moon, the stars The center of their orbits are found in Love. How does something that is infinite take on the appearance of something that is finite? How does Consciousness appear to itself as a multiplicity and diversity of selves and objects? In an attempt to answer this question I’d like to give you an analogy. Imagine a woman named Mary falling asleep here in Titignano. Mary’s mind is a single indivisible whole, like each of our minds, and Mary dreams that she is Jane walking the streets of New York. So, Mary’s mind has fallen asleep to its own infinite, indivisible nature and imagines instead that it has assumed the limited form of Jane’s mind. Jane is walking the streets of New York, seeing people, cars, buildings, which from Jane’s point of view all seem to be outside her mind. When Jane closes her eyes the streets of New York disappear, and therefore she legitimately concludes that whatever it is that is seeing the streets of New York lives just behind her eyes. This and similar experiences convince Jane that the knowing with which she knows her experience lives just behind her eyes, or in her chest, in her body. All her thoughts, feelings and subsequent other activities and relationships are How does something that is infinite take on the appearance of something that is finite? How does Consciousness appear to itself as a multiplicity and…Read more

After so much time and fuss we begin to discover that what we are looking for is what we have always been. That's all, we just forgot. Separation is an illusion. A little mad idea believed, that something could be apart from God, Creation apart from it's Creator. And so began this amazing dance, incredible dream. Time, space and all these seemingly limitless ways that energy (Mind) is able to contract into ideas, stories, bodies, angels, lifetimes, worlds, galaxies... All of it just a little mad idea of separation, believed. --- Alert to the needs of the journey, those on the path of awareness, like swans, glide on, leaving behind their former resting places. dhammapada V. 91 --- Every thought and every breath is a breath and a thought occurring in awareness. We are awareness. This thought-less and breath-less awareness. Mooji --- To penetrate into the essence of all being and significance and to release the fragrance of that inner attainment for the guidance and benefit of others – by expressing in the world of forms; truth, love, purity, and beauty – this is the sole game which has intrinsic and absolute worth. From the Dhammapada

With an image of liberation as the goal the wise abandon darkness and cherish light, leave petty security behind and seek freedom from attachment. To pursue such release is difficult and rare, yet the wise will seek it, detaching themselves from obstructions, purifying heart and mind.   Live your life well in accord with the Way – avoid a life of distraction. A life well-lived leads to contentment, both now and in the future.  Just as a sweet scented and beautiful lotus can grow from a pile of discarded waste, the radiance of a true disciple of the Buddha outshines dark shadows cast by ignorance.   It is wisdom that enables letting go of a lesser happiness in pursuit of a happiness which is greater.   There are those who awaken from heedlessness. They bring light into the world like the moon emerging from clouds.  Better than ruling the whole world, better than going to heaven, better than lordship over the universe, is an irreversible commitment to the Way.   Only blessings can arise from seeking the company of wise and discerning persons, who skillfully offer both admonition and advice as if guiding one to hidden treasure.  Let go of that which is in With an image of liberation as the goal the wise abandon darkness and cherish light, leave petty security behind and seek freedom from attachment. The Teachings of Love

An awakened master's responses to a devoted student whose life has been given over to the Journey and to the Teachings of Love. Your "work" is to stay in the not knowing and to be truly helpful by holding the Truth of complete wholeness for another, and for the inner Light within you. There is no help in the false belief in anguish, heartbreak and sadness. Be aware of the temptation to drama. This is the lie! Agreeing with another’s false identity of "weakness" is using the distortion of false caring to affirm separation and lack. Hold always the intention and prayer to remember the Truth of not being the body, and finding the true strength in Faith and Trust that nothing is "wrong.” You can only be truly helpful by holding this Truth for the other and with the other. No attachment to outcome, rather Trusting that nothing can be lost in Love. Your calling is to affirm the Truth of Wholeness, and not what your ego is habitually familiar with.  Let go of the "hoping" another will be cared for. Trust in the perfection of Love's unfolding, and in the truth that everyone is always in the heart of Love's Grace. The Two Worlds

We have been told to bring the darkness to the light, and guilt to holiness. And we have also been told that error must be corrected at its source. Therefore, it is this tiny part of our self, the little thought that seems split off and separate, that the Spirit of Love needs. The rest is fully in God’s keeping, and needs no guide. But this wild and delusional thought needs help, because, in its delusions, it thinks it is the Child of God, whole and omnipotent, sole ruler of the kingdom it set apart, to tyrannize by madness into obedience and slavery. This is the little part we think we stole from heaven. We are asked to give it back to heaven. Heaven has not lost it, but we have lost sight of heaven. Let the Spirit of Love remove it from this withered kingdom in which we set it up, surrounded by darkness, guarded by attack, and reinforced by hate. Within these barricades is still a tiny segment of our Self, complete and holy, serene and unaware of what we think we have separated off from it. Be we not separate, for the One Who surrounds and pervades this withered kingdom has brought union to us, to return our little offerings of darkness and illusion to We have been told to bring the darkness to the light, and guilt to holiness. And we have also been told that error must be corrected at…Read more

Mooji

These words are rendered from the transcript of a dialogue with Mooji that occurred in the spring of 2011. There are clearly some people whose intellect can readily grasp Advaita Vedanta teachings, and even though the grasping is merely at an intellectual level, behind that there will already have been a subconscious search for something deeper. When this search first opens up through the intellect so that there is a looking for oneself as a separate, private, autonomous entity, and then nothing is found, that seeing or discovery can be the first taste of a miracle. And, though it may be liberating at some level, it’s not enough, it’s not quite there. It will maybe be the first perforation through the screen or personal façade, but it has to continue deepening and refining itself in the heart. It must do this. Otherwise, you find people who are quite content to push Advaita about with words – the ‘talk school’ folks. Conversation with them will not feel in harmony with what is actually present in your heart. You may even find such an interaction irritating, because it doesn’t feel like it is coming from authentic seeing; but rather it appears like These words are rendered from the transcript of a dialogue with Mooji that occurred in the spring of 2011. Illusion is perceived by what is neither subject to illusion nor able to speak to levels and degrees of it. ≈ The phenomenal world is imagined upon the substratum of Reality, which remains unaffected by it in any way. Reality is always and only One. It is as if various scenes are passing on a cinema screen: fire seems to burn buildings to ashes; water seems to swallow ships; yet the screen on which the scenes appear remains unburnt and dry. Why? Because only the screen is real. Similarly a mirror, unaffected by what it reflects. When viewpoint awakens to Knowledge the Universe is perceived to be only Brahman. Viewpoint immersed in the phenomenal sees only the world; yet upon awakening it is seen that Reality alone is. ≈ When the false notions ‘I am the body,’ ‘I am these thoughts’ or ‘I am not realized’ fall away, Supreme Consciousness or the Self alone remains. In the world’s present state of knowledge this is called ‘Realization.’ But the truth is that Realization is eternal and already exists, here and now. Consciousness is pure Knowledge. The seeming mind that arises out of it is made of thoughts. The Peace Of God

It has been said that there is a kind of peace that is not of this world. How is it recognized?  How is it found?  And being found, how can it be retained?  Let us consider each of these questions separately, for each reflects a different step along the way. First, how can the peace of God be recognized?  God's peace is recognized at first by just one thing; in every way it is totally unlike all previous experiences.  It calls to mind nothing that went before.  It brings with it no past associations.  It is a new thing entirely.  There is a contrast, yes, between this thing and all the past.  But strangely, it is not a contrast of true differences.  The past just slips away, and in its place is everlasting quiet.  Only that.  The contrast first perceived has merely gone.  Quiet has reached to cover everything. How is this quiet found?  No one can fail to find it who but seeks out its conditions. God's peace can never come where anger is, for anger must deny that peace exists.  Who sees anger as justified in any way or any circumstance proclaims that peace is meaningless, and must It has been said that there is a kind of peace that is not of this world. The thickets blocking your path

Rumi (Rendered from Coleman Barks and Nader Khalili translations) Of Being Woven The thickets blocking your path are the imaginings that keep you from coming this Way. All those fears that you will be broken
into bits like a glass bottle. This road demands courage and stamina, yet it is full of
footprints!
 Who are all these companions?
They are the rungs of your ladder! Use them!
With company you quicken your ascent.
You may be happy enough going alone, but with others
you will get farther, and faster. Every prophet sought out companions.
A wall standing alone is useless, but put three or four walls
together, and they will support a roof to keep grain dry
and safe. When ink joins with a pen, then the blank paper can say something.
Rushes and reeds must be woven to be useful as a mat. If
they were not interlaced the wind would blow them away. Like that, God joined up creatures, and gave them
friendship. --- Where Everything Is Music Don’t worry about saving these songs! And if one of our instruments breaks, it doesn’t matter. We have now fallen into the place where everything is music. When all thoughts Are exhausted I slip into the woods And gather A pile of shepherd's purse. Like the little stream Making its way Through the mossy crevices I, too, quietly Turn clear and transparent. -- The flower invites the butterfly with no-mind; The butterfly visits the flower with no-mind. The flower opens, the butterfly comes; The butterfly comes, the flower opens. I don't know others, Others don't know me. By not-knowing we follow nature's course. -- My hut lies in the middle of a dense forest; Every year the green ivy grows longer. No news of the affairs of men, Only the occasional song of a woodcutter. The sun shines and I mend my robe; When the moon comes out I read Buddhist poems. I have nothing to report to my friends. If you want to find the meaning, stop chasing after so many things. -- A cold night - sitting alone in my empty room Filled only with incense smoke. Outside, a bamboo grove of a hundred trees; On the bed several volumes of poetry. The moon shines from the top of the window, And the entire neighborhood is still except for the cry of insects. Looking at this When all thoughts Are exhausted I slip into the woods And gather A pile of shepherd's purse. Like the little stream Making its way Through…Read more

Do Understand

Nisargadatta Do understand that you are destined for enlightenment. Cooperate with your destiny, don’t go against it, don’t thwart it.There are no conditions to fulfill. Allow your destiny to fulfill itself. There is nothing to be done, nothing to be given up. Just look and remember, whatever you perceive is not you, nor yours. It is there in the field of consciousness, but you are not the field and its contents, nor even the knower of the field. It is your idea that you have to do things that entangle you in results of your efforts. Let come what comes and let go what goes. Desire not, fear not, observe the actual, as and when it happens, for you are not what happens, nor are you to whom it happens. Ultimately even the observer you are not. Discover all you are not. Body, feelings, thoughts, ideas, time, space, being and not being, this or that - nothing concrete or abstract you can point to is you. You must watch yourself continuously - particularly your mind - moment by moment, missing nothing. This witnessing is essential for the separation of the self from the not-self. The Master is the one who shows that you are light itself and that darkness never existed. Through his Grace he removes the erroneous idea that there is a state of un-enlightenment which has to be overcome. A Master cannot be identified through his words or his actions, nothing he does or says proves or disproves his spiritual state or his qualifications to be a Master. If your mind automatically becomes quiet and peaceful in the proximity of someone else, then that may be taken to be an indication (not a proof) that this person is qualified to be a spiritual teacher. There are no other reliable signs. One cannot realize the Self without the grace of a living Guru. While you think that you have a body, only a Guru in the body can help you. You do not find a Guru by moving from one country to another. You find one by having an intense desire for freedom. There is no such thing as a Self-realized person. When there is no "person" the Self is realized. When there is no "person" the question of coming and going cannot arise. The body is an appearance in the Self. When The Master is the one who shows that you are light itself and that darkness never existed. Through his Grace he removes the erroneous idea…Read more

The Ego

Mind always re-produces as it was produced. Produced by fear, the ego reproduces fear. This is its allegiance, and this allegiance makes it treacherous to Love because we are Love. Love is our power, which the ego must deny. It must also deny everything which this power gives to us,  because it gives us everything. No-one who has everything wants the ego. Its own maker, then, does not want it. Rejection is therefore the only decision which the ego could possibly encounter if the mind which made it knew itself. And if it recognized any part of the Children of God, it would know itself. The ego therefore opposes all appreciation, all recognition, all sane perception, and all knowledge. It perceives their threat as total because it senses the fact that all commitments which the mind makes are total. Forced therefore to detach itself from us who are mind, it is willing to attach itself to anything else. But there is nothing else. It does not follow from this, however, that the mind cannot make illusions. Yet it does follow that if the mind makes illusions it will believe in them, because believing them is how it made them. The Mind always re-produces as it was produced. Produced by fear, the ego reproduces fear. This is its allegiance, and this allegiance makes it treacherous to…Read more

Stand Still

I said to my soul, be still, and wait without hope For hope would be for the wrong thing; wait without love For love would be love of the wrong thing; there is yet faith But the faith and the love and the hope are all in the waiting. Wait without thought, for you are not ready for thought: For the darkness shall be the light, and the stillness the dancing. T.S. Elliot Willing to die, You give up your will. Keep still until, moved by what moves all else, you move. Wendell Berry Stand still. The trees ahead and bushes beside you Are not lost. Wherever you are is called Here, And you must treat it as a powerful stranger, Must ask permission to know it and be known. The forest breathes. Listen. It answers, I have made this place around you. If you leave it, you may come back again, saying Here. No two trees are the same to Raven. No two branches are the same to Wren. If what a tree or a bush does is lost on you, You are surely lost. Stand still. The forest knows Where you are. You must let it find you. The Great Way is not difficult, Just don’t pick and choose. If you cut off all likes and dislikes Everything is clear like space. Make the slightest distinction And heaven and earth are set apart. If you wish to see the truth, Don’t think for or against. Likes and dislikes Are the mind’s disease. Without understanding the deep meaning You cannot still your thoughts. It is clear like space, Nothing missing, nothing extra. If you want something You cannot see things as they are. Outside, don’t get tangled in things. Inside, don’t get lost in emptiness. Be still and become One And all opposites disappear. If you stop moving to become still, This stillness always moves. If you hold on to opposites, How can you know One? If you don’t understand One, This and that cannot function. Denied, the world asserts itself. Pursued, emptiness is lost. The more you think and talk, The more you lose the Way. Cut off all thinking And pass freely anywhere. Return to the root and understand. Chase appearances and lose the source. One moment of enlightenment Illuminates the emptiness before you. Epilogue to Lessons

You are as certain of arriving home as is the pathway of the sun laid down before it rises, after it has set, and in the half-lit hours in between. Indeed, your pathway is more certain still. For it can not be possible to change the course of those whom God has called to Him. Therefore obey your will, and follow Him Whom you accepted as your voice, to speak of what you really want and really need. His is the Voice for God and also yours. And thus He speaks of freedom and of truth. No more specific lessons are assigned, for there is no more need of them. Henceforth, hear but the Voice for God and for your Self when you retire from the world, to seek reality instead. He will direct your efforts, telling you exactly what to do, how to direct your mind, and when to come to Him in silence, asking for His sure direction and His certain Word. His is the Word that God has given you. His is the Word you chose to be your own. And now I place you in His hands, to be His faithful follower, with Him as Guide You are as certain of arriving home as is the pathway of the sun laid down before it rises, after it has set, and in…Read more

From the Avadhut Gita

Truly, it is by the grace of God That the knowledge of Unity arises within. Then a man is released at last From the great fear of life and death. ❧ All that exists in this world of forms Is nothing but the Self, and the Self alone. How, then, shall the Infinite worship Itself? Shiva is one undivided Whole! ❧ The five subtle elements that combine to compose this world Are as illusory as the water in a desert mirage; To whom, then, shall I bow my head? I, myself, am the stainless One! ❧ Truly, all this universe is only my Self; It is neither divided nor undivided. How can I even assert that it exists? I can only view it with wonder and awe! ❧ What, then, is the heart of the highest truth, The core of knowledge, the wisdom supreme? It is, “I am the Self, the formless One; By my very nature, I am pervading all.” ❧ That one God who shines within everything, Who is formless like the cloudless sky, Is the pure, stainless, Self of all. Without any doubt, that is who I am. ❧ I’m the infinite and immutable One; I’m pure Truly, it is by the grace of God That the knowledge of Unity arises within. A Course In Miracles

This is a course in miracles. It is a required course. Only the time you take it is voluntary. Free will does not mean that you can establish the curriculum. It means only that you can elect what you want to take at a given time. The course does not aim at teaching the meaning of love, for that is beyond what can be taught. It does aim, however, at removing the blocks to the awareness of love’s presence, which is your natural inheritance. The opposite of love is fear, but what is all-encompassing can have no opposite. This course can therefore be summed up very simply in this way : Nothing real can be threatened. Nothing unreal exists. Reaching to Meet

This site is the offering of a gathering place for beloveds whose lives are most of all about the ending of beliefs in the illusion of separation. It has evolved out of the vision of a venue where seekers awakening into Spirit and similar others can meet and converse in an environment that is significantly alternative to what is typically found on the internet. The form it is currently taking reaches to provide a beginning context to inspire and further ongoing, helpful, shared explorations into non-dual experience and the undoing of conditioning and beliefs; through insight, understanding, courage, diverse perspective and possibility. An image that could be helpful is one of a large garden with smaller areas shaped and cultivated around some common themes, micro-environments perhaps, conversational explorations where beloveds may gather, wander the garden paths, listen in, and perhaps join other conversations in different ways. The dissolution of the meta belief of separation and the lack of love, by way of offerings from the Advaita Vedanta, A Course in Miracles and many other non-dual teachings is the common ground that is being attempted here. Whether conversation occurs within the seeming form of one path or another, between teachings or totally outside of This site is the offering of a gathering place for beloveds whose lives are most of all about the ending of beliefs in the illusion…Read more

You are invited to participate, respond, question and engage through comments and replies on Pages and Posts, and through topics and replies in the Forums. You can quickly and easily register in the Login/Register area of the sidebar. Being a relatively new site, some of the methods used to limit spam and trolling may need further refinement. If you experience any difficulties registering, logging in or responding, please let us know either by clicking here or by using the Contact SpiritAwake link in the sidebar. The many different areas here have been gathered, interweaved, and shaped so as to invite and hopefully enable easy engagement and conversation in multiple ways. Pages, posts, forums and other areas may be added, changed, redesigned and moved around as Spirit calls.  Suggestions are very much welcome. At the heart of all desire is the desire to Awaken. As we bring that desire alone into all our seeming activities, existence responds. And so it will be here. All of this is very new, a work in progress. The attempt has been in part to assemble a comfortable, intuitive and supportive place to meet. If in wandering around you notice any gaps, navigation difficulties, mistakes or clunkiness, or see perhaps how things could be improved or made more inviting, please let us know.   You are invited to participate, respond, question and engage through comments and replies on Pages and Posts, and through topics and replies in the Forums. Velveteen Rabbit

What is to become of all this is in God's Hands, simply said. And with virtual tongue in cheek, all of us together are God's hands. It does not matter "who" is behind this site. Anyone who posts, comments, starts a topic, creates a page, or replies to something will become, simply by the act of joining the conversation, a part of the evolving shape, content, challenge, helpfulness and appearance of this site. This sort of virtual adventuring into Here and Now could be comparable to, if anything, the story of the Velveteen Rabbit. What may be found here will become enlivened as well as enlivening by and through open and opening hearts joining together in this very awareness that we are. Through such an unfolding, Truth may reveal its own always present discoveries to us. Membership is open, and how beloveds want to identify themselves is their calling. All that is required here is a "name," a functional email address, and a password. Because of how beliefs in separation and lack of love can sometimes manifest over the internet that much is necessary. Member email addresses are not public. If a beloved wants to make private contact with another site member a PM (personal message) can be sent to them What is to become of all this is in God's Hands, simply said. Come Down To The Stream

Come down to the stream with me, we will look into it together.  It will be our mirror. You will see you are just like me, a great and powerful King. True Intimacy

True intimacy is what happens when we are transparent, when there is nothing left to uphold, nothing to hide or hide behind, nothing to protect. Then another can see us, meet us, and in that meeting discover there is only just this that we are. In intimacy there is nothing to give or to take, there is simply whatever arises in this vast open limitless space of being. Intimacy belongs neither to you nor to another, so there is nothing to lose or to gain. In intimacy, there is only One being, One Heart, experiencing this apparent dance of differences, change, time, expressing to and as Self. True intimacy does not even require another. In aloneness you are transparent to yourself and totally at one with all that is. It is intimacy with the Beloved that we are. True intimacy is what happens when we are transparent, when there is nothing left to uphold, nothing to hide or hide behind, nothing to protect.…Read more

I know

I know who you are, I know who I am, I know the truth and the meaning of love. God is singing within your heart, breathing inside your breath, more close than a hand within a glove, or a thought within the head. If you listen, my friend, with an open heart, you will know this declaration is true. The Truth? You only forgot, some time ago. The Surprise? This very revelation itself is you. You wrote these words. Yes, you, back then, when your heart was filled with ecstasy, blind drunk on the clear wine of love. I know who you are, I know who I am, I know the truth and the meaning of love. God is singing within your heart,…Read more

Clarification

Anything presented as a rendering indicates that editing has occurred to deepen and clarify, to perhaps bring what is pointing a little deeper into where it is pointing to. In Truth what is pointing and where the pointing points is the Same. Course renderings are excerpted either from the Course UrText or from the Foundation For Inner Peace's third volume, and seek to offer alternative context for conversation and sharing. The UrText contains text and formatting not a part of the later Foundation For Inner Peace publications, is without the added structure of those publications, and contains other minor differences. In Course renderings, second person pronouns have sometimes been changed to first person, again as a way perhaps to bring what is pointing a little deeper into where it is pointing to. Also in Course renderings Son and Sons have been changed to Child and Children, while references to Holy Spirit have been changed to Spirit of Love. Some beloveds who are otherwise called to visit this site may find the third person male pronouns in the Course difficult.  Beyond the customary ways of cultural language and writings over centuries, consider the possibility that if you are feeling moved by what this site is about, concerns about gender identification may be something that wants to fall away.  In Truth we are neither bodies Anything presented as a rendering indicates that editing has occurred to deepen and clarify, to perhaps bring what is pointing a little deeper into where it is…Read more
